When I was ready to type up Trey's journaling, I called him into my
office and asked him for a personal statement. I explained that a
personal statement is a short statement that captures who you are
and/or what you believe - it says something about you or is something
that motivates you.
Just to give you a point of reference here, Clark's personal statement
is "Just do it and don't be stupid!", Chase's statement comes from the
musical Annie "You're never fully dressed without a smile." (back to
story)
Trey stood there thoughtfully for a moment, and then said "I'm not the kind of guy that goes to the food mart at the gas station to buy beer and cigarettes"
I cracked up! As I often do in response to Trey. For a fraction of a
moment I thought about telling Trey that that statement wasn't going to
work. Thankfully, years of experience as a scrapbooker, kicked in and I
simply said "That will work, thank you Trey"
Later that evening as I recounted this exchange with Geof, Trey
explained further "Mom, don't you remember that day when the scooter
ran out of gas?"
"Yes"
"Well, that's the day I decided the kind of person I am"
Clearly, I had no idea how impressionable 30 minutes on the curb of a gas station can be to an eight year old.
All of this leads me to our 15 MINUTE CHALLENGE OF THE DAY
I want you to spend fifteen minutes at dinner or whenever you can,
asking and recording personal statements of the people you love. Now, I
realize that you may not be able to set a timer for this one -- but I
also want you to realize (or remember) how little time it takes to ask
and listen to and record authentic sound bites from those you scrapbook
for.
If you live alone, do not have children etc .., please apply this
challenge to yourself (write your own personal statement) and/or use
the telephone to get and record a few personal statements of friends or
distant family. OK?
To be eligible for our daily contest, I need you to post a comment and share one of the personal statements you record.
Should be FUN, don't you think?
