cover Sara Winnick designed this cute layout. That surfer girl with the gorgeous smile totally reminds me of our own Beth Proudfoot, but there's no relation.)
p.13 Honey, I shrunk the assistant editor. That "little" lady
leaning against the stack of mini albums is our own Jenny Willden. I'd
guess the whole stack of albums is probably 30 inches tall, which would
make Jenny about the same size as this woman.
p.15 Yeah, that's my iPhone, it its modeling debut. Cathy always
travels with a green bag just like the one pictured here. They're
pretty darn cool! Enter to win one here.
p.17 We really ARE going to run this contest, but we're off to a
bit of a late start (we're working on a website redesign right now,
which will launch in about a week, so we're doing our best to keep
up!). Go ahead and post your response to Stacy's weekly challenges in
our gallery,
and I'll announce the prize winners here on the blog. One winner each
week! The first challenge is: create a layout using the color palette
on page 52. Ready set go!
p.19 We borrowed these drum sticks from an employee's Rock Band video game. Why? Because our featured designer, Tina Cockburn, informed us that young Matthew is an aspiring drummer. Rock on, Matt!
p.29 That BasicGrey rub-on tool kicks butt. It's got a rolling
ball tip, and it's one of those things that you wouldn't think you'd
really need...until you try it.
p.33 Probably my favorite feature! Very fun.
p.35 My "Puppy Love" layout has journaling around the edges of
the hand-pieced heart, but it's too small to read. It says "When the
little cousins come to visit, I'm always surprised by how they adore
Ruby -- all 100-plus pounds of her. To them, this is 'Ruby's house,'
and we're just the people who live with her."
p.38 I love Rachel's ballet layout. Notice how half the
photos are color and half are black-and-white? In the original version
of the layout, all the photos were in color. But there was a bright
purple wall in the background of three of the pics, and the purple was
so distracting that it upstaged the products and the other photos. So
Rachel decided to reprint those photos and bring the layout back in.
Cool idea, huh?
p.47 This layout was originally designed on a black background.
We asked Tina to switch it to red so we'd have more color variety in
the section opener layouts. (The project on page 67 was also black.)
p.48 We have an issue with layouts that have full white
backgrounds. The edges of the layouts just don't show up very well on
our magazine paper. So, when cute reader Anne Magee turned in this
layout originally, the white extended to the edges of the layout. We
asked her to trim it down and mount it on another color. It turned out
great, huh?
p.54 Elizabeth Dillow had to sneak these boots out of Gracie's
room while she was sleeping, so she could mail them to us for this
shot. We returned them ASAP, since little Gracie can't go for very long
without her favorite boots! By the way, I love this column. One
sentence journaling? Brilliant.
p.57 Here's a white layout too...this one we just added a thin
black "keyline" around it so the edges would clearly stand out. (See
page 68 for another example of this.)
p.70 Anyone catch the pop-culture reference on this layout? I like big BUTTONS and I cannot lie...
p.81 I love this image. Makes me want to dive into a bucket of popcorn!
p.92 How cute is that little drum? Tina sent it in with the layout, along with the tiny flag.
p.93 This is my favorite layout in this issue! Isn't it cool? I
LOVE that whale photo. But this layout is way, way heavier than you'd
ever imagine. (You might say it's a "whale" of a layout. Sorry, I had
to.) There are five full layers of paper here: white background paper,
patterned paper, blue cardstock mat, white cardstock mat, and
wall-to-wall photos. It's hefty! Probably cost extra postage to get it
to the office.
p.95 Hey that chick looks like Angie Lucas! At least three
different people who looked at our magazine proofs said that. And I
even thought so myself..."hey, when was I ever in Key West?" AND, her
name is even "Angel." AND, I too have a habit of posing for pictures
with statues. Weird. I have found my bizarro-world twin, and she lives
in Sterling, Illinois. (I was almost going to include this in the
little game at the end. You know, find an "Angie look-a-like," but I
thought that would be too hard, and who knows if you'd pick flattering
comparisons. This one I do consider flattering. Plus she's an awesome
designer.)
p.104 This is my second-favorite layout. It's so inspiring.
p.114 Yay Cathy! Way to be bold and share your hot teen self with the whole world. Wish I was that cute as a teenager!
Now for our contest! Tell me the page numbers where you'll find the following:
A layout about a pitcher, and another one about a catcher.
Two different layouts featuring close-ups of crabs.
The exact same digital kit used on two different layouts!
(hint: you're looking for a total of six layouts, on six different pages in the magazine)
The very first person to comment with the correct page numbers will receive a cool prize package from the office, and I'll also pick three additional random winners (but answers must also be correct). Make sure your username shows up in your answer!
Winner!
