Halloween just brings out the best in us. We could not stop laughing
when we were brainstorming the "Fabulous Finds" column (Sept/Oct issue,
page 32). Many ghoulish ideas were tossed about, many of which were
wisely rejected. We settled on dressing Wendy up in a witch hat and
having a green hand holding the transparent ghost. (Before I go on, I
must say how in love I am with all of these products. The creepy
clears, that epoxy owl, the Halloween bookplates. Darling!)
Back to the matter at hand. When I signed on for the hand-modeling job, I thought I was signing on for a short session with a makeup artist. But Marin wanted the green hand to be just a bit more realistic, so she trotted out the food coloring. I have to say, I was a bit nervous, thinking I was going to be stained for days on end. But I followed through!

You know, the McCormick website does not recommend this as a skin dying solution (for all those occasions when you really need to dye your skin). It's perfectly safe, of course, but it gets all over everything. It smears off. It never really dries. But it looks wicked cool, doesn't it?
And luckily, it came off completely after just 10 minutes of vigorous scrubbing (using three kinds of soap) in the break room, garnering not a few strange looks from my esteemed colleagues. I did, however, keep the black nails for a few days, just to make people wonder.
